If you've recently purchased the BSR external CD drive kit
from DAK, you'll find no mention of a special switch for
MSCDEX, the Microsoft CD ROM Extensions RAM-resident
program, that frees up some of your precious conventional
RAM. If you load MSCDEX with the command MSCDEX /E, the
program stores approximately one-half of its code out of the
way in expanded memory.
The amount of conventional RAM available on my 386SX
(running DR DOS 6.0) went from 616K down to 557K using DAK's
recommended install process. The addition of the /E switch
brought me back up to 574K. Going a step further, I HILOADed
the entire MSCDEX line (with the /E switch) and came right
back up to 616K.

Editor's Note: The /E switch is a valuable thing to know
about, and it works for all CD ROM drives that come with the
Microsoft extensions. If you have MS-DOS 5.0, you can use
LOADHIGH to load MSCDEX high, just as Mr. Runner did with
HILOAD under DR DOS. Third-party memory managers have their
own, similar programs. Of course, you'll need some expanded
memory in your system in order to take advantage of this
special feature.
Only one caveat is in order for this tip. TSRs and drivers
that use expanded memory sometimes fail to work properly
with Windows when it's running in 386 Enhanced Mode. If your
system fails under Windows, you may have to stop using the
/E switch.
